SHAW’S
SUPERMARKETS HELPS CURT AND SHONDA SCHILLING “PITCH’N TO WIN” THE FIGHT AGAINST
LOU GEHRIG’S DISEASE
Shaw’s Supermarkets in partnership with “Curt’s Pitch for ALS”
raises over $173,000 for ALS research and patient care programs during summer
promotion
(Norwood, MA) – The ALS Association Massachusetts Chapter announced today
that Shaw’s Supermarkets raised over $173,000 for ALS (commonly known as Lou
Gehrig’s Disease) research and patient care during the “Pitch’n to Win”
campaign. The campaign, which has occurred annually since 2006, ran from July
10th through August 3rd at all Shaw’s and Star Market
stores throughout New England. As part of the program, customers were asked
to purchase paper baseballs at checkout for either $1.38 or $3.38. All proceeds
benefit “Curt’s Pitch for ALS” – the program that Curt Schilling, number 38 of
the Boston Red Sox, and his wife, Shonda, started in 1993 to help those
afflicted with ALS.
“Shonda
and I can’t express our gratitude enough to the thousands of people that
contributed to this incredibly important campaign. Every single dollar raised
brings us one step closer to finding a cure for ALS,” said Curt Schilling.
“One of the great things about being a part of the Shaw's
Supermarkets family is our commitment to serving the community. I am proud to be
President of an organization that spends countless hours both volunteering and
raising funds for our nonprofit partners,” added Larry Wahlstrom, President of
Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc.

Since
partnering with “Curt’s Pitch for ALS” in 2006, Shaw’s Supermarkets has
generated over $850,000 for ALS research worldwide and patient services and
programs throughout New England. “We are forever grateful to Shaw’s
Supermarkets for their ongoing commitment to our cause. This campaign is yet
another testament to their generosity and compassion for organizations like The
ALS Association,” said Debra Sharpe, President of The ALS Association
Massachusetts Chapter.
On
Friday, August 29th, Shaw’s presented Curt Schilling and The ALS
Association Massachusetts Chapter with a check at Fenway Park. At the ceremony,
the top four performing Shaw’s stores were recognized for their outstanding
efforts during the campaign. Those stores, in order from 1st place
to 4th place are Easton, MA, Woodbury Ave. in Portsmouth, NH,
Wallingford, CT and Taunton, MA. The Shaw’s in Easton raised $9,382.56,
breaking the Shaw’s record for revenue raised from an in-store scan campaign.
What is ALS?
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)—more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s
Disease—is a motor neuron disease characterized by progressive weakening and
wasting of all voluntary muscles, including those associated with moving,
speaking, swallowing and breathing. In most cases, the disease does not affect
the mind or the senses at all. There is no known cause for ALS and no cure yet
but research is on an accelerated pace to find the answers.
